Wakaya is an innovative, independent NGO committed to long-term, holistic, respectful partnerships with local communities in Angola.
Through research and community and other stakeholder engagement, we build projects which are truly community-led in the conservation, education and skills building and alternative income sectors.
Wakaya was started from a belief that it is possible to take a more creative, responsive and innovative approach to conservation and development projects, knowing there is no one size fits all solution.
Communities are made up of people, who when given the ability to control their own futures will bring their own knowledge and innovation to a challenge, grab the opportunity and run with it.
Wakaya’s projects fall into three main themes, and our impact will be judged by how well we are delivering
and the happiness of our community partners.
Not simply ABC and 123, our skills training across digital, preventative health and agriculture all come under the heading of education, and every little bit helps… Read More
Improved agriculture techniques will create shorter term impact, but in the long term we hope to address more pressing issues like the yearly lighting of fires… Read More
This will be seen in many ways. Not just microenterprises bringing in money, but fewer trips to the hospital saving money on transport and medicine, larger yields on farming… Read More
Wakaya Camp is the hub for Wakaya’s community development work and a center for learning through hands-on activities and creative skills development.
Malanje is one of Angola’s most beautiful provinces, home to some of the country’s most outstanding natural wonders.
It was also sadly one of the provinces most impacted by Angola’s wars, and a large majority of the people who currently live there were displaced.
Despite good soil and a lot of land, community farming methods are not sustainable, with a lack of seeds and equipment limiting good harvests.
The impacts of climate change are being felt with extreme weather and the use of fire as a land clearing technique is extensive and damaging.

The workforce of tomorrow needs education and opportunities, and Angola’s landscape needs healing so nature can protect us all in the future.
Join us in our mission to bring opportunities and transformation where they are needed most. Together, we can create a real change.
Sustainable progress is not just about solutions; it’s about creating opportunities for people to lead, innovate, and shape their own path forward.
The balance between nature and humanity is delicate; preserving it requires both heart and strategy.
True development starts with understanding the heart of a community and building from within, not imposing solutions from outside.
True change begins when we listen, learn, and work alongside communities, respecting their knowledge and empowering them to shape their own futures.
Conservation is not about protecting nature from people, but about helping people to protect nature for future generations.
Technology is most powerful when it amplifies human potential, helping communities to connect, learn, and innovate for a better future.
