Introducing Wakaya: A Name and Logo with Deep Meaning

At Wakaya, every element of our identity is rooted in purpose, connection, and meaning. From our name to our logo, we’ve woven together symbolism that reflects the heart of our mission in Angola: healing and harmony between people, nature, and the land.

What’s in a Name?

Wakaya is derived from the Umbundu language, spoken in Angola’s central highlands (Planalto) region, and translates to “the healed.” For us, this word is a guiding light—a symbol of restoration and balance.

“Being healed means being whole again, everything working in harmony once more,” explains Wakaya Founder and Executive Director, Tania Paschen. “Wakaya as an organization is setting out to heal many things—the land, nature, people, and the future. It is a very organic, earth-based word, bringing a very African sensibility to our work and what we are setting out to do.”

This name reflects our belief that true healing is interconnected, encompassing the environment and the communities who depend on it. It’s a call to work together toward a shared vision of wholeness and renewal.

The Meaning Behind Our Logo

Our logo visually captures the essence of Wakaya. At its center is a butterfly, a universal symbol of transformation and renewal. But this butterfly goes deeper, representing not just change but the interconnectedness of life—people, plants, and animals thriving together in harmony.

The butterfly’s presence also serves as a reminder of nature’s delicate balance and our responsibility to protect it. Its inclusion highlights the seamless integration of human and ecological well-being, a theme that is at the core of Wa’kaya’s mission.

“Wakaya as an organization is setting out to heal many things—the land, nature, people, and the future. It is a very organic, earth-based word, bringing a very African sensibility to our work and what we are setting out to do.”
An African Sensibility

Both our name and logo embody a deeply African perspective, grounded in the cultural and environmental landscapes of Angola. By embracing Umbundu language and drawing inspiration from nature, we honor the traditions and wisdom of the communities we work alongside.

Wakaya is more than just a name or a logo—it’s a commitment. It’s a representation of our vision to heal the earth and its people through respect, collaboration, and innovative solutions.

As we move forward, we invite you to join us on this journey of restoration and harmony. Together, we can work toward a future that is healed, whole, and thriving for all.
