Our first Graduation Day at Wakaya Camp!

OUR ART PROJECT GRADUATION CEREMONY

Our first Graduation Day at Wakaya Camp!

After 18 art classes and weeks of community engagement, we gathered friends and partners for a celebratory lunch (complete with music from a handmade guitar) and official certificate ceremony with our young students.

Before we wrapped up we sat down with our artist teachers and students to listen to their thoughts about the classes and the stories behind their artworks.

As the Camp buildings were being built we knew it was important to start including our community partners in the vision and direction of the Camp. To bring them to the site and create some things together.

We could not be more proud of our 25 students – their paintings are fantastic! – or thankful to our partners from the MAL collective for bringing their skills to our Malanje communities. Carlos Bento, Wilson Bafox, Tonilson Francisco, Stay Artes and Felizardo Pereira helped guide our students, and we know they were also touched by the experience, having never spent so long in rural Angola and admitting they learnt as much from the students as they taught.

The paintings will be displayed at our launch later in the month and then around the Camp, and we have had some interest expressed in buying them too, with money going to the artist and back into a central art fund to continue more classes and buy materials.
It’s the start of something bigger! Creativity is everywhere and we will continue to foster it!
