OUR FIRST MANDALA GARDEN HARVEST

OUR FIRST MANDALA GARDEN HARVEST

In September, our superstar Agriculture Project Manager Celsiana was busy creating her passion project, a Mandala Garden.

It’s an ancient, holistic permaculture concept that organizes plants around a central point, incorporating keyhole-shaped beds, to maximize space and enhance biodiversity. The overall aim is to create harmony between the plants, soil, and water, fostering regeneration and creating a self-sustaining system for producing food, herbs and flowers.

We hired 6 people from our communities to help lay it all out and learn the technique, with a view to creating something similar back in their villages in the future, as well as help to maintain ours.

And this month we have already had our first harvest of cabbages, lettuces and herbs.

When our kitchen is up and running at Wakaya Camp we’ll be using all our harvested vegetables and herbs in nutritious meals, but for now we’ve bartered our produce with local community members for new seeds.

The seeds we’ve sought out are for medicinal plants, which we want to plant and foster more of an understanding around. We’re working with our communities to understand the sort of plants they use for traditional practices. There’s so much to learn from them!
