At Wa’kaya, we understand the vital role that trees play in environmental health, community well-being, and climate resilience. Our Community Tree Nurseries and Seed Collecting Project brings together education, eco-agronomy, and community engagement to promote tree planting, biodiversity, and sustainable income opportunities in Malanje, Angola.

The Project: Growing Roots of Change

In partnership with KAYA, we have identified indigenous tree species best suited to the Malanje region. These species not only thrive in the local environment but also provide long-term benefits for soil health, water retention, and biodiversity.

The project is built around three core components:

1. Community Tree Nurseries:
   • Establishing nurseries in partnership with local communities to grow indigenous tree species.
   • Providing saplings for tree planting on community lands, schools, and degraded areas.
   • Enabling the sale of saplings as a sustainable income stream for participants.
2. Seed Collecting and Propagation:
   • Training community members in seed collection, processing, and propagation techniques.
   • Encouraging sustainable practices by focusing on native species that support local ecosystems.
   • Developing seed collection as an employment avenue and a vital part of reforestation efforts.
3. Education and Awareness:
   • Teaching communities about the ecological and economic benefits of tree planting and forest conservation.
   • Integrating tree planting into our education programs, fostering environmental stewardship in children and families.

Communities often resort to clearing trees for firewood or farming, exacerbating these issues. The Community Tree Nurseries and Seed Collecting Project directly addresses these challenges by:
