Observing
Wa’kaya Community Visits – Research to Build the Right Foundations

At Wa’kaya, we believe that understanding is the cornerstone of meaningful and sustainable change. This past October and November, our team embarked on our first community study and engagement trip in Malanje, Angola. These visits marked the beginning of a vital journey to listen, learn, and build relationships with key stakeholders in the region.

Our efforts focused on gaining an in-depth understanding of the realities in our target areas, working closely with the Malanje Provincial government, municipal administrators, and community leaders. Together, we developed a comprehensive framework to explore a wide range of issues that are central to our project designs. These include farming methods and market access, availability of water and firewood, schooling infrastructure, local cooperatives, and cultural practices.

The Importance of Listening and Observing

“Research is at the base of all our work, ensuring best practices, listening to and observing community members, understanding the realities on the ground,” said Wa’kaya Founder and Executive Director Tania Paschen.

One example she highlighted was the annual practice of setting fires and widespread burning in the region. Understanding the reasons behind this practice, such as its ties to hunting and rites of passage for young boys, is critical. “Only by understanding these cultural practices are we able to look at potential alternatives and solutions that are not so harmful to the environment,” Paschen explained.

Building a Community-Led Approach

These visits were not just about identifying challenges but also about uncovering opportunities. By involving community members in discussions, Wa’kaya aims to create solutions that are not only sustainable but also culturally sensitive and locally driven.

It’s a collaborative process where communities contribute their own knowledge and innovation to address shared challenges.

The Road Ahead

The insights gained from this initial research will play a pivotal role in shaping Wa’kaya’s upcoming projects in Malanje. From education and skills development to conservation and alternative income programs, every initiative will be informed by the voices of the community.

This is just the beginning of Wa’kaya’s work in Malanje. As we move forward, we remain committed to building respectful, long-term partnerships that empower communities to lead their own development while fostering sustainable practices that benefit both people and the environment.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this exciting journey. Together, we can build a brighter future for the communities of Malanje and beyond.
