About Wa'kaya

Conservation & Community Development

Wakaya works at the intersection of conservation and community development. Through strong partnerships with communities in Angola, our focus is EDUCATION, ENVIRONMENT and ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT.

Our educational programs and microenterprises, community tree nurseries and agroforestry training, as well as preventative health initiatives and digital skills training, are designed in a holistic way to address long-term economic and environmental challenges.

Together, these efforts build a healthier and more sustainable future for rural communities.

Our Core Values

We are setting out on this journey with a clear compass—our core values.

They guide the way we work, connect with communities, and grow together, ensuring that everything we do stays true, inclusive, and impactful.

Together We Grow

Shaping Resilient Futures

Why Malanje?

Malanje is one of Angola’s most beautiful provinces, home to the second-largest waterfalls in Africa and the unique Pedras Negras rock formations. Despite its natural beauty, the region has been deeply impacted by war, leaving a displaced population and major social and environmental challenges, including unsustainable farming, the effects of climate change, and habitat damage.

In the Cangandala National Park, the critically endangered giant sable antelope is under threat from illegal poaching and deforestation. However, developing tourism at these natural sites holds significant potential for creating jobs and economic opportunities for local communities, and the organization Wakaya is working with the local administration to help realize this potential.

Planting Seeds for a Stronger Future

In consultation with the Malanje regional government and their Needs Assessment and Development Strategy, as well as our own community research, we identified four key areas to focus our efforts.

Wakaya focuses on EDUCATION as a central pillar to our community initiatives, where we consider training and skills building across a range of sectors, not just literacy and numeracy.
