Wa’kaya is an innovative, independent NGO committed to long-term, holistic, respectful partnerships with local communities in Angola.
Through research and community and other stakeholder engagement, we build projects which are truly community-led in the conservation, education and skills building and alternative income sectors.
Wa’kaya was started from a belief that it is possible to take a more creative, responsive and innovative approach to conservation and development projects, knowing there is no one size fits all solution. Communities are made up of people, who when given the ability to control their own futures will bring their own knowledge and innovation to a challenge, grab the opportunity and run with it.
Communities in Malanje have alternative income streams, better education & practical skills, a strong appreciation of nature and are protecting the land around them.
To partner with communities to shift from unsustainable use of natural resources towards nature-based solutions, leading to economic empowerment and a more resilient future.
Vision & Mission
Our approach to partnership is built on respect, mutual learning and accepting that progress and setbacks are a normal part of community development.
By implementing best practice methods and basing all our projects in appropriate and affordable solutions, we work to address the greatest needs for the greatest impact.
Our work is based on the belief that the success of local communities and natural resources in Malanje is deeply intertwined. To ensure we are on the right path, we have developed our Theory of Change and a Strategic Plan to guide our operations in our start up phase.
Our Strategic Plan covers three years, our set up phase, where we will be running pilot projects with a view to test and learn, as well and building trust with our partner communities.
Our Theory of Change is Communities around Cangandala National Park have an improved economic reality and are living in harmony with the natural world through shifting away from unsustainable practices towards new methods of farming & nature-based solutions.
We are so thankful to already have been given support from many generous donors & collaborators.
